Abstract

Two adolescent psychotherapy cases are presented in which electronic media became part of the clinical interaction and contributed to the treatment. In the first case, the patient maintained connections with friends during the sessions through the use of his cell phone as a way to cope with the challenge and risk of beginning a relationship with the therapist. In the second case, a young patient made use of portable electronic media to share music that made available more of the patient's fantasy life, identifications, and motivations. In both cases, what the therapist had initially experienced as an “intrusion” of these media came to be recognized and utilized to facilitate therapeutic progress.
