Abstract

1. Non-specific esterase activity is found in protein extracts of Spongila sp. 2. Disc-electrophoresis of these extracts displayed four distinct esterase bands. 3. A further characterization of these esterases was made with a radio-isotope assay on acetylcholinesterase and the use of specific inhibitors. 4. Although the presence of cholinesterase in Spongilla sp. seems probable, the measured acetylcholinesterase activity is too low to account for a cholinergic nervous system.
