Abstract

The present paper deals with the calculations of the linear extrapolation length and the flux depression in absorbing and scattering slabs surrounded by a weakly absorbing moderator. Simple expressions are obtained if elementary diffusion theory is supposed to apply within the moderator and the multiple collision method is used in the slab. Numerical results, which refer to a slab of natural uranium, are compared with those calculated on the assumption that diffusion theory holds throughout the geometry.
