Abstract

No significant differences were found for cardiac muscle levels of G-6-P, ATP, CP or lactate in stress susceptible and stress resistant pigs. However, at exsanguination, hearts from stress susceptible pigs had higher levels of ATP and higher levels of lactate than hearts from stress resistant animals; but, the differences only approached statistical significance. Stresses prior to slaughter significantly lowered (P<.01) the ATP concentration and significantly decreased (P<.05) G-6-P concentration in the myocardium of the left ventricle. During heart incubation, cardiac muscle ATP levels significantly decreased (P<.01) whereas cardiac muscle lactate levels significantly increased (P<.01) for both stress susceptible and stress resistant pigs.
