Abstract

This paper examines the representation of time and space in the iconography of mural paintings in tombs dating from the Liao dynasty in Xuanhua in Hebei Province, China. Various iconographical motifs, including their position, function and meaning within the architectural tomb structure, are examined in detail. While the constellations depicted on the ceiling evoke a self-contained universe for the tomb occupant, other carefully placed motifs suggest how the tomb occupant was imagined to have moved through the tomb space.
