Abstract
New data on Neogene floras (leaves, fruits, seeds) indicate that a mixed-mesophytic forest existed throughout Greece from the Oligocene to the (lowermost) Pleistocene (Plio/Pleistocene boundary). The vegetation is similar to that of the Paratethys regions (Germany, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, etc.). The climate was principally a humid, warm-temperate Cfa-type (sensu Köppen). There are no floristic indicators of any aridity or salinity crisis in Greece perhaps only a slight shift to a Cw-climate (dry winters!).
