Abstract

Changes in the structure and perception of chemistry may be seen in the various syllabi published from the early 18th to mid-19th centuries. Those of Shaw (1734), Watson (1771), Moyes (1784, 1786) and Sullivan (1856) are outlined here, together with brief biographical details of the authors and others in their sphere of influence. Data on Moyes' assistant may well provide the previously unknown early life of W. Nicol of Nicol Prism fame.
