Abstract

ABSTRACT The influence of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (Gestyl®) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (Pregnyl®) was investigated in 11 patients with secondary amenorrhoea. In order to suppress adrenal secretion the patients were given dexamethasone (Decadron®) at the same time. In addition to the routine clinical investigations, the excretion of oestrogens, pregnanediol, 17-KS, 17-OHCS and gonadotrophin in the urine was estimated before and during the stimulation and suppression tests. Vaginal smears were also studied. The tests showed that in four patients, androgen secretion from the ovaries was significantly increased. Five patients had an amenorrhoea of hypophyseal and two others of ovarian origin.
