Abstract

The main characteristics of estuarine populations are their ability to live in the dynamic conditions of tides and currents and their tolerance of changes in salinity. Daily cycles of tide and currents, salinity, and temperature and rainfall ycles of longer amplitude are superimposed on one another to create an extraordinarily rich and complex environment. There is considerable knowledge of temperate estuaries but very little information on those of the tropical zone, most of which comes from marginal and atypical areas, such as the northern Gulf of Mexico, South Africa, and Australia.
