Abstract

The results of detection of malignant ceils in pleural and peritoneal effusions over a six year period are analysed and comparison is made with the appearances of serosal biopsies which were taken in over half of the patients. The results, although representing a satisfactory diagnostic rate, serve to emphasize the difficulties involved in the recognition of malignant cells in effusions. The point is made that new and up to date techniques are necessary for proper evaluation of these fluids and increased clinical confidence in cytological diagnosis.
