Abstract

Intensive research and major technical advances in the last decade have resulted in a remarkable improvement in transfusion supportive care which has significantly contributed to the increased survival now achievable in patients with leukaemia and aplastic anaemia. Platelet transfusions are now available in almost all hospitals, while granulocyte transfusions, previously used only in cancer centres, are now being dispensed by many regional blood transfusion centres in the United States. A number of reviews dealing with donor selection and safety, collection methodology and clinical guidelines for cell component use have been published in the last few years
