Abstract

The influence of acrylic acid on the yield of radiation cross-linking of LDPE was studied. It was found that gel content is dependent not only on the presence of ionic forces and covalent interchain bonds but also on the structure of acrylic acid being grafted to PE. Under conditions favouring formation of cyclic monomer structures both heat as well as chemical treatment exhibit a strong effect on gel content, since interactions of an interchain type predominate.
