Abstract

Islam is a universal religion which transcends ethnic and national boundaries. Recognition of this fact does not, however, preclude the perception of religion as an essential element of ethnic identity. In the context of ethnicity in Malaysia, it is more accurate to attach the hyphenated ethnic label Malay-Muslim to the com munity popularly known as Malay because their ethnic identity is exclusively tied to Islam. This insight leads us to new perceptions of various aspects of socio-cultural, political, ,and economic develop ments in contemporary Malaysia.
