Abstract

Geological similarities between the Caledonides of the United Kingdom and the Appalachians have long been recognized and form the basis of many attempts to reconstruct a single, continuous orogenic belt incorporating them. Surface continuity is examined in numerous ways (e.g. structure, metomorphism, palaeontology) but extrapolation between exposures is only possible with the assistance of geophysical methods. The author has made several attempts to use geophysical data to correlate gross structural zones in the Canadian Appalachians with their postulated counterparts in the British Isles (Haworth, 1980; Haworth and Jacobi, 1983; Jacobi and Kristoffersen, 1981; Lefort, 1980).
