Abstract

There is abundant evidence that when plant tissues, whole organs such as roots, or slices of tissue such as potato tubers or carrot roots, are placed in solutions there is a portion of the tissue into which the solute penetrates relatively readily and another portion into which it passes much less readily, if at all. It should be stated at once that this two-fold classification probably needs further subdivision and that, for example, the relatively readily may be divided into more and less readily, and so on. One of the clearest justifications for this two-fold classification is the form of curve of uptake of solute such as KCI by slices of carrot root against time.
