Abstract

The primary purpose of this paper is to test a model of household structural variation developed by Barbara Laslett. This model predicts change in household composition due to class conflict arising from the development of a capitalist economy. In the present study data for a rural Kentucky community in 1900 and 1980 are analyzed. This historical period differs from that used by Laslett to develop her model. This analysis indicates that household variation at either point in time is the result of the developmental cycle rather than class conflict, and that the cause of change in household structure over time is the result of factors other than class conflict.
