Abstract
A comparison between crustal thicknesses, discontinuities, velocity-depth structures, and composition shows distinct differences for certain geologic units. Compared to the rather uniform oceanic lithosphere, the continental crust and upper mantle have a more complicated structure. However, many similarities are found when comparing similar tectonic areas such as young mountain belts, old shield areas, or certain transition areas. A possible connection exists between the age and the crustal thickness in stable areas.
