Abstract

Planck's formula for blackbody radiation is modified to derive an expression for X-ray production from a thin anode. The continuous X-ray spectrum is explained in terms of electron backscatter losses and photon attenuation. The electron backscatter losses arc postulated to depend on the thickness of the anode and the energy of the incident electrons. Possible use of monochromatic X-rays for mammography is briefly discussed.
