Abstract

The present paper is a survey of a few optimization problems frequently occuring in planning and operation studies of power systems : optimal load flow; long-term planning of a transmission system; short-term management of a set of thermal generation plants and hvdro-electrical reserves. With some broadassumptions, these problems can be formulated into large-scale linear programs, whose structure permits to carry out special algorithms : relaxation method, Renders decomposition method, column-generation procedure, method allowing to solve flow problems, partitioning method of the basis matrix. In each case, after having formulated the problem and put forward its special structure, the solving method used at Electricite de France is briefly described. The maximum dimensions are also indicated as well as the required computer time.
