Abstract

Abstract A review on the applications of particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), laser-holographic interferometry (LHI), and transient liquid crystal thermometry (TLCT) in fluid flow, heat transfer, and combustion is presented. Examples and illustrations are given of the visualization of flow patterns in lateral aneurysm, heat transfer in ribbed duct flows, flame spread over combustible surfaces, and heat transfer enhancement in rotating serpentine ducts. In addition, numerical visualization by the use of large-eddy simulation (LES) is given of the temporal evolution of spanwise large-scale vortical structures and its relation to the mixing of fuel and air particles in a ramjet combustor, and the instantaneous streamwise vortical structures in a three-dimensional supersonic/subsonic free shear layer flow.
