Abstract

It is shown that by a suitable transformation wetting problems in the Sullivan model for an n -component mixture can be formulated as problems in the classical mechanics of a point particle in a conservative potential in n -dimensional space. As a preparation for the systematic study of the wetting properties of Sullivan mixtures, the phase behavior of the corresponding binary van der Waals mixture is investigated with the aim of extracting as much analytic information as possible. Results known previously in the context of the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model are rederived in a simple manner, and some new ones are added.
