Abstract

In recent years, the side effects of long-term lithium treatment have attracted increasing attention for two main reasons. Firstly, as the recurring nature of most affective disorders is now well recognized, there has been a shift in emphasis from treatment of acute conditions to prevention of recurrences by long-term treatment. Secondly, as lithium treatment has become widely used for extended periods of time, the side effects of long-term treatment have become an important clinical issue.
