Abstract

Liquid metal alkyls are strong Lewis acids and bases and useful solvents in which to conduct organometallic reactions. Cp 2 ZrMe 2 undergoes rapid methyl exchange with pure Me 3 Al but reacts with EtAlMe 2 in Me 3 Al to form Cp 2 Zr(μ-CH 3 )(μ-CH 2 CH 2 )AlMe 2 . Neat R 3 Al reagents in which R has a hydrogen atom produce solvated Cp 2 ZrH 2 derivatives. The gas-phase reaction of Cp 2 ZrCH 3 + with Me 3 Al, studied by ion cyclotron resonance spectrometry, produces an ion formulated as Cp 2 Zr(μ-CH 2 ) 2 Al +
