Abstract
The process of solving word problems in elementary mathematics is not unlike the process of modelling more complex situations. Operations research methodology provides a framework for understanding this process and suggests some guidelines for systematically addressing the typical modelling problems that are found in elementary algebra and calculus textbooks.
