Abstract
The quadratic formula is presented to all pupils at some stage of their mathematical life. Very few of these pupils will actually have had the formula derived for them. Most pupils will have had it presented to them as some magic formula which you use to find the roots of a quadratic when you cannot factorize the quadratic. The teacher would then possibly work through one or two examples to show the pupils how the formula is used. It is not that the derivation of the quadratic formula is difficult, but for most pupils it is an awkward piece of algebra for them to work through and most teachers would possibly omit the derivation of the formula.
