Abstract

Despite a great deal of experimental and theoretical efforts already devoted to UGa 3 the microscopic nature of its magnetic properties has not been fully clarified yet. There are several features observed that are either unexplained or remain a subject of controversy. In this paper we summarize the present knowledge on UGa 3 , emphasize the complexity of its low-temperature behavior with subsequent order–order transitions, and discuss a few hypotheses formulated recently in the literature, i.e. orbital ordering that sets in few degrees Kelvin below T N , structural phase transition occurring in the paramagnetic state, crossover from low- T itinerant to high- T localized spin fluctuations, non-Fermi liquid behavior at the lowest temperatures.
