Abstract

Non-convertible coatings have played an important and vital role in the growth of industry during the twentieth century. The use of nitrocellulose lacquers for protecting fabric-covered aircraft in the early part of this century assisted the growth of the aviation industry. The availability of quick-drying nitrocellulose lacquers in the 1920s assisted the automotive industry in developing assembly-line manufacturing methods. The furniture industry is also greatly indebted to the role lacquers have played in improving cost-effectiveness and throughput of timber products. Although most of this growth revolved around nitrocellulose lacquers, many other non-convertible coatings were also developed to meet new customer needs, and some of these are discussed in this chapter.
