Abstract

The solvent extraction of palladium(II) from an aqueous ammonium chloride-hydrochloric acid mixture by anti-2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime, the active species of SME 529, in MSB 210 diluent was investigated from the viewpoints of extraction equilibria and kinetics. From the equilibrium study, it was found that palladium(II) is extracted according to the following extraction reaction: PdCl 2− 4aq. + 2HR org. ⇌ PdR 2org. + 2H + aq. + 4Cl − aq. The equilibrium constant was also determined. From the study of extraction kinetics, the forward reaction order of this extraction reaction was found to be 1, 1, −1 and −2 with respect to palladium(II), oxime, hydrogen ion and chloride ion, respectively. An interfacial reaction scheme was proposed to interpret these reaction orders.
