Abstract

Abstract The investigation on the solvent extraction of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) with thiodibenzoylmethane and N-phenyl-β-mercaptocinnamamide into chloroform and benzene in the presence of pyridine bases showed the adduct formation of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) chelates with pyridine bases and the synergistic effects of the pyridine bases on the extraction of the metal ion. The synergistic effect decreases in the order of the basicity of the bases, namely γ-picoline > β-picoline > pyridine. The paramagnetic shifts in the proton NMR spectra of γ-picoline in the extracts of the nickel(II) and cobalt(II) with these ligands verified that γ-picoline molecyle coordinates with the paramagnetic nickel(II) and cobalt(II) chelates of these ligands. The electronic spectra of the extracte of nickel)II) with these ligands and pyridine bases support the formation of the nickel(II) adduct of d8-octahedral configuration.
