Abstract

N-Phenylcinnohydroxamic acid (PCHA) reacts with vanadium (V) in thiocyanate medium, giving water insoluble mixed ligand complex, extractable into chloroform. On the basis of sensitive colour reaction, a new method for the extraction and photometric determination of vanadium(V) has been developed. The mixed ligand complex can be quantitatively extracted into chloroform from 3.0–7.0M acetic acid media. The green coloured ternary complex has a broad absorption band around 590 nm. The photometric sensitivity of the colour reaction is 0.0068μg of vanadium per cm2. The effect of foreign ions and several experimental parameters have been studied. The composition of the complex has been found to be 1∶2∶2 (vanadium:PCHA:SCN).
