Abstract

Assam coal was extracted with different solvents of boiling range from 65 °C (hexane) to 330–350 °C (liquid paraffin). Minimum extractability of coal was observed in hexane and maximum in anthracene oil. Assam coal was also extracted successively in the different solvents in the order of increasing boiling point. The step and repeat successive extraction in liquid paraffin-anthracene oil-quinoline of coal up to four steps shows 68% extractability of coal. About 64% of the coal can be extracted through anthracene oil extraction up to three steps (72 h). About 72% of the coal can also be extracted in anthracene oil in steps. However, prolonging extraction in anthracene oil reduces the extractability up to 9%, which could be due to the repolymerization of coal.
