Abstract

The solvent dependence of the 205Tl NMR chemical shift, the 205Tl-H coupling constant, and the 13C chemical shift and 205Tl- 13C coupling constant for (CH 3) 2TIClO 4 and (CH 3) 2TlNO 3 are reported. The 205Tl chemical shift solvent dependence is over 200 ppm. The shift correlated linearly with the 205TI-H coupling constant. The shift also correlates linearly with the p K a of the solvent, demonstrating the importance of the solvent basicity. The effect of ion pairing on the shift is demonstrated and discussed. Binary solvent mixtures were investigated to obtain data on relative solvating abilities. The results are discussed in terms of models of the thallium-solvent interaction.
