Abstract

Solvent and aerosol abuse is prevalent in Canada. A mandate of the Promotion and Prevention Directorate of Health and Welfare Canada was to determine the extent of the abuse in western Canada. In 1979 the directorate provided funds to: (1) study the extent of solvent and aerosol abuse in three Saskatchewan centers, (2) determine the knowledge of retailers in the area of solvent and aerosol abuse, and (3) develop educational materials which may be used by retailers and elementary school staff. Because the study was carried out in the College of Pharmacy and since most pharmacists are frequently consulted on drug-related problems, a comparison of the knowledge of retail pharmacists versus other retailers was made with respect to solvent abuse.
