Abstract

Artificial intelligence and machine learning have started to play a crucial role almost in every walk of life. This chapter provides a concise and comprehensive repository on the use of machine learning for containment, diagnosis, and forecasting of the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers have come up with various machine learning techniques for tracing, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19, and prediction of its spread. The chapter also highlights the various challenges pertaining to the containment and treatment of the COVID-19 pandemic. First, we discuss the role of machine learning in screening for and diagnosis of COVID-19. Different images such as X-ray and CT scan, and different blood tests coupled with various machine learning techniques have been investigated by a number of researchers in the literature. Patient monitoring and contact tracing are the two other main areas where machine learning has been employed, with even better prospects for dealing with this kind of situation in future. Finally, various prediction and forecasting models have been utilized to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, and these are illustrated and discussed in detail towards the end of the chapter.
