Abstract

THE consideration of an instantaneous monodirectional point source for the solution of the single-speed transfer equation is of twofold interest. On the one hand, in a number of problems for non-stationary collimated sources of small extent the model of the instantaneous monodirectional point source is a satisfactory approximation: on the other hand, this model defines a solution fundamental (in the sense of the theory of generalized functions) of the non-stationary transfer equation, the presence of which enables us to find the solution of the problem for a source with arbitrary time, space, and angular characteristics, by means of a convolution of the fundamental solution with a function of the source. We will consider the case of an infinite homogeneous medium and an isotropic scattering indicatrix.
