Abstract
We present a unique continuation theorem for the free boundary of solutions of the porous medium equation U t =(U m ) xx in one space dimension, with m>1. As an application of this result we shall also show that solutions whose free boundaries are real analytic arcs, are in fact the positive parts of real analytic functions defined on a neighbourhood of their support
