Abstract

An improved solution method is proposed for the traversal of the pre- and post-buckling load-displacement paths of nonlinear structural systems. A scaled arc-length method is derived by introducing two scaling matrices for the purpose of nondimensionalizing the vectors that define the arc-length constraint equations. The scaling matrices are also used in gauging the relative contribution of the load and displacement components to the arc-length constraint equations. Various scaling procedures are proposed and their impact on solution progress examined. Automatic incrementation techniques for the arc-length methods are evaluated. These include the constant and variable arc-length incrementation criteria.
