Abstract

Experimental infinite-dilution molar Kerr and Cotton-Mouton constants for 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, triphenyl-s-triazine and tri(2-pyridinyl)-s-triazine, and the dipole moment of tri(2-pyridinyl)-s-triazine, as solutes in dioxan at 298 K are reported. Analysis of the results yields the effective dihedral angles for conrotatory conformations of these molecules in the solution phase as: 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, 30 - 10 ; triphenyl-s-triazine, 15 ± 15° and tri(2-pyridinyl)-s-triazine, a nearly equimolecular mixture of two conformers, 15 ± 5°.
