Abstract

A solution is presented for the one-dimensional problem of the expansion of cylindrical and spherical cavities in soil, the behavior of which can be described by an arbitrary model of the soil within the framework of plastic-flow theory. It is demonstrated that in dilatance-prone soils, expansion of a spherical cavity is more accurately described by a Drucker-Prager model, and a cylindrical cavity by a Mohr-Coulomb model.
