Abstract

A population balance model for grinding of metal powders incorporating three size change, mechanisms, namely flattening, attrition and breakage, is presented. Analytical solution is obtained for the simplified case of pure flattening and pure attrition. The predominance of pure flattening has been observed in the initial stages of aluminum grinding. The pure attrition model is found to be valid only in the case of brass and during the initial stages of grinding of copper. The validity of the pure breakage model towards the latter part of grinding of aluminum has been established.
