Abstract

Comparison of the absorptlon spectra in tetrahydro-2methylfuran at --196 deg C of alkali naphthalenide or biphenylide wlth gamma -irradiated solutions of naphthalene or biphenyl demonstrates electron attachment in the latter. Gammairradiated glassed solutions in hydrocarbons show the same effect. Including a second solute which competes forelectrons in gamma -irradiated samples decreases G(naphthalenide) or G(biphenylide) and pi-ovides a measure of the electron-attaching efficiency of the second solute; twentyseven solutes were tested, some in two solvents.
