Abstract

Ice nucleation behaviors were investigated by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the freezing of emulsified solution droplets with silver iodide (AgI) as an ice-nucleating agent. For various aqueous organic solutions studied, notable concentration-dependent ice nucleation behaviors appeared in the presence of AgI: two heterogeneous nucleation temperature (Tf,het) curves and/or anomalous Tf,het logarithmic increases were confirmed as the function of concentrations. The solute adsorption phenomena were considered to trigger these changes. The increase in supercooling degree with increasing concentration tended to be greater for homogeneous nucleation than for both heterogeneous nucleations. A counterexample was found in the dimethyl sulfoxide system.
