Abstract

To the Editor-The recent letter by Ranki [1] led us to respond. The article by Peakman et al. [2] reported elevated levels of soluble CD4 in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, findings similar to those reported by myself and colleagues. In 1990 [3] we reported elevated levels of soluble CD4 in asymptomatic patients with HIV infection, HIV-infected patients with uncomplicated generalized lymphadenopathy, and patients with AIDS-related complex or AIDS. In addition, we reported in 1990 [4] that azidothymidine treatment of patients with ARC or AIDS decreased the level of soluble CD4 in their circulation. As in Ranki's case, the results of Peakman et
