Abstract

Fructan polymers were found in the 80% ethanol extract of epidermal strips of Allium cepa L. These carbohydrate polymers were detectable in epidermis held in darkness in the presence of abscisic acid, but virtually disappeared in the presence of KCl in the light. The fructans in onion leaf epidermal strips constitute a very soluble polymeric carbon source which could be of importance in stomatal function.
