Abstract

Recently, there has been an enormous increase in the number of studies on the solubilization and purification of membrane proteins. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the increase in researchers’ interest in problems related to biological membranes such as energy transduction, cell-to-cell recognition and secretion. Another reason is the very rapid development of techniques including new materials and apparatus, for purifying proteins. Availability of these ‘secret weapons’ from commercial sources may also have encouraged researchers to attempt purification of new membrane proteins. So at the present, purification of membrane proteins is not much more difficult than purification of soluble proteins.
