Abstract

Single crystals of Ti doped LaMgAl 11O 19 (LMA:Ti) were grown by the flame fusion process (Verneuil method). They are of a slightly distorted magnetoplumbite structure. Annealing (at high temperatures) in air or under H 2 atmosphere of coprecipitates with the same compositions indicates that up to one Al atom by formula unit can be replaced by Ti in the LMA matrix. Ti can be inserted in 3+ or 4+ oxidation state or in a mixture of both states. EPR studies of single crystals demonstrate that Ti 3+ has a strong preference for the (2a) site and also at higher titanium doping levels for the (4f) site which are both octahedral. Ti 3+ content of the third octahedral site (12k) remains always low. An EPR study of reduced crystals was used to localize Ti 4+ after its conversion into the 3+ state. Ti 4+ is found mainly on the (2a) site.
