Abstract

Abstract Using a potentiometric titration technique, ethylene glycol mono-ethers (Me, Et, n-Bu, Ph) and diglycol mono-ethers (Me, Et) have been shown to cause elevation of pH in benzoic acid-sodium benzoate solutions. The butyl glycol ether is shown to form micelles; critical micelle concentration values are given and the “loss” of benzoic acid from aqueous solution is considered. In mixtures with polysorbate 80, the glycol ethers increase the uptake of benzoic acid by the micelles.
