Abstract

Solomon W. Golomb was born into an intellectually gifted family in Baltimore, MD. His father, a polyglot, was a professor at Baltimore Hebrew College and Sol grew up speaking several European and Middle Eastern languages. In adulthood he would add at least two East Asian languages to the point of being able to lecture in both. With this background he was also expert in the etymology of numerous words and expressions in a variety of language families and he never missed an opportunity to so enlighten conversation with friends and colleagues.
