Abstract
The use of Solomon and his legend in magical texts and practices constitutes an extraordinary development that, in some aspects, would have a bigger impact in the Western world than the biblical account itself. The importance of characterization of Solomon as an exorcist appears in the large corpus of Late Ancient magic amulets and bowls. This chapter provides summary of the knowledge that is attributed to Solomon in Greek texts such as the Hydromancy of Solomon , the Selenodromion of David and Solomon or the Magical Treatise of Solomon . The “esoteric” description of Solomon was very popular throughout Late Antiquity and its popularity endured the test of time. The presence of Solomon in texts and artifacts of different religious milieus, during such an extended period of time, and in a broad area indicates that magic belonged to the common heritage of Late Antiquity.
