Abstract
The complex plane formulation of the inverse scattering problem is applied to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and its relations to various methods of finding soliton solutions of the equation are made clear. In paricular the Backlund transformation for N -soliton and the stability of soliton are viewed from this standpoint.
